I want to write a blog post talking about how to find your personal style because I know a lot of people struggle with this 😀
2020 is a new decade and I’m currently in the process of switching up my style. A lot has changed in my life, new relationships, career goals and aspirations. Therefore, I want my new wardrobe to reflect this.
It took me a while to find my aesthetic and it will probably change. However, it’s okay for your aesthetic to change because life changes and people grow; as we should. So this is how I found my aesthetic.
Step 1: Always remember to Wear what you LOVE!
I love to mix and match modern styles and trends and I would rather be comfortable and feel like ‘me’, than win any best-dressed competitions, or a wardrobe full of things I don’t like. I love wearing flats any chance I get, I love neutral colors for versatility and am a believer in wearing clothes that flatter the female figure.
I’m not an advocate for dressing every day like you’re dancing at club or attending an outdoor festival because we do live in a society with dress codes and policies.
But, I believe clothes should make your life easier and happier.
So go forth, find your signature style, and always, always wear what you love.
Step 2: Do your research
Back in the day, our parents used to flip through magazines with their friends to see what’s trending. However, social media has replaced magazines and I feel its a great starting point for newbies.
Although a lot of sites have great inspiration for creating your personal style, I think like my favorite is Pinterest. It’s because Pinterest allows you to search for specific keywords and it’s active enough to find new content every day.
In fact, I have a Pinterest board that I post on every day. You can follow me here: Monaco Jones | Fashion and Style
Another great place is Instagram. I don’t really follow specific influencers because sometimes their content is very curated and not relatable to me. My favorite accounts for outfit inspiration are Outfitbook, Flvsh Nike and fentysbeauties because they feature a variety of women with many aesthetics.
I also post a bit on Instagram and if you’re interested, you can follow me too.
Step 3: Make your mood board and shopping list
After scrolling through social media, you’ll find some key items that you’d like to add to your wardrobe that matches your personal style. Save them to your mood board. You can create mood boards on a lot of sites but my favorite is Pinterest since you can download browser extensions that add pictures from the internet to your mood board.
The items that are saved to your mood board can be placed on a shopping list. This is how my shopping list looks like:
BUY:
- One shoulder crop top
- Jogger pants
- Tennis skirt (pink, white and maybe black)
- Air Force 1s (white)
AVOID:
- Baggy pants
- Triangle Glasses
- Skirts that are too short
Step 4: Find stores that fit your new style
This can be tricky because social media doesn’t always list where models and influencer originally bought their items. Below are some of my favorites :
Don’t forget that that thrift stores can be an AMAZING place to find great clothes that are more budget-friendly. Along with Poshmark and DePop.
Step 5: Donate what you’re not wearing
Keep the good karma going by donating clothes that are in great condition to your local thrift store or homeless shelter. Not only does it help your local community but clothes that no longer fit your style can be a blessing to another fashionista that’s changing her style
Anyways, this concludes today’s blog post. Don’t forget on you can follow me on my other social media platforms for more inspiration: Pinterest, TikTok and Instagram
